Dactylomys dactylinus is the scientific name for the Amazon Bamboo Rat, a rodent that lives in the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Bamboo Rat will face a shrinking habitat which will reduce the amount of food available that they will have access to. With the lack of food, the Amazon Bamboo Rat will have to develop larger kidneys and larger bones to store large amounts of energy, and more efficient muscles to reduce the energy needed for movement. There will also be fewer trees in the savannah compared to the rainforest, so the Amazon Bamboo Rat will also have claws that are adapted to burrowing in both soft and hard layers of dirt, and a shorter tail since they will not be climbing as much. With more animals seeking to hunt the Amazon Bamboo Rat, they will develop sharp spines on the outside instead of their rough fur.
