Present and Future
The Brown throated sloth lives in warm tropical rainforests in Central and South America. It spends most of its life high in tall trees, hanging from branches with its long, curved claws. Sloths move slowly to conserve energy and avoid predators. Their thick, brownish-gray fur sometimes grows algae, helping them blend into the forest. They mostly eat leaves and digest them slowly in their specialized stomachs.
In the future, climate change and deforestation may make rainforests hotter, drier, and less dense. With fewer trees, sloths may need to travel farther for food and shelter. They could develop stronger limbs and claws to move between trees more easily. Their fur may become lighter and thinner to prevent overheating. If leaves become scarce, the sloth may adapt to eat different types of plants to survive.
