A polar bear is a large, powerful mammal with thick white fur. It has a long neck and a small head with small, rounded ears and dark eyes. Its black nose and skin contrast sharply with its pale fur. Polar bears also have massive paws and sharp claws.
If rising temperatures cause the ice to melt in the future, polar bears will have less to hunt and may not get enough food. As a result, many bears could lose weight. This could cause the polar bear population to decrease and possibly die out.
Polar bears rely heavily on sea ice to hunt seals. If the ice continues to shrink, they may need to adapt. Some might spend more time on land and eat other types of food. Even so, it would be very difficult for many polar bears to survive.
