The Guatemalan Pharomachrus mocinno bird, also known as the quetzal, currently lives in cloud forests located in Guatemala. Climate change and deforestation may cause the quetzal to adapt naturally. If forests get drier than usual, quetzals could get short, wide wings to help them fly quickly between trees and open spaces. Its bright green wings might turn into a brown color in order for it to blend better in dry leaves and dirt. The quetzal's eyes could become sharper, so it can clearly see where its food is located. Its long tail might get shorter and stiffer, so it doesn’t get stuck in bushes. The quetzal will not only change features, but it may change its current diet into eating beetles, elderberries, coffee farm berries, and lizards. All of these important changes would help the beautiful quetzal survive hotter weather and forests with fewer trees in Guatemala.
