The Toco Toucan lives in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America, especially the Amazon. It lives high in the trees and mostly eats fruit, but it also eats insects and small animals. Its large beak helps it reach fruit on thin branches, and its colorful feathers blend into the bright rain forest. In the future, deforestation and climate change may change the toucan’s habitat. About 17% of the Amazon has been lost in the past 50 years due to logging, farming, and cattle ranching. If this continues, the forest may become drier with fewer trees and less fruit. The toucan might develop adaptations like a longer beak to catch insects, stronger claws for climbing, and stronger wings to fly farther between trees. However, evolution usually takes thousands of years, so the toucan may not adapt fast enough to survive rapid environmental changes.
