Over the next thousand years, polar bears could change significantly due to the loss of sea ice in the Arctic. Since they rely on ice to hunt seals, bears that can survive with alternative food sources will have a survival advantage. This could lead to bears with smaller bodies, which help prevent overheating as temperatures rise, and more flexible diets to take advantage of whatever food is available. Over many generations, these changes could make polar bears less specialized for ice hunting. Polar bears might not be the pure ice-dependent hunters we think of today. They could become more generalist predators, possibly looking and behaving like grizzlies.
