The two-toed sloth is currently listed as “least concern” by the IUCN. My prediction is that it will be more vulnerable in the future, though. One reason is because of deforestation. Due to the declining rates of trees, the sloths will have little habitat to live in. Another reason is due to an increase in power lines. While a two-toed sloth may be crossing power lines to get from one place to another, there will be more electrocutions. Also, more of them will get sold illegally as pets. Young sloths are taken and then sold as pets where they often suffer improper care and diet. Lastly, more will die of domestic and stray dog attacks (when they get forced to the ground due to deforestation, they will get more frequently attacked by dogs). This is the leading cause of death for them in urbanized jungle areas.
