The Hognosed Pit Viper (Porthidium nasutum) lives in humid rainforests of Central and northern South America. It stays on the forest floor near streams and dense leaf litter, where its dark brown and tan pattern provides excellent camouflage. This snake has a pointed snout for digging, keeled scales for traction, and heat-sensing pits to locate prey. It is nocturnal and hunts frogs, lizards, and rodents as an ambush predator. Young vipers use their bright yellow tails to lure prey, while adults strike quickly with venomous fangs.
In the future, the species adapts to a grassy savanna habitat. It becomes larger with smoother scales and lighter coloring to blend into sand and grass. It develops moisture sensing pits and stronger neurotoxic venom to hunt larger prey such as foxes and roadrunners. Unlike its rainforest ancestor, it is diurnal and buries nests in sandy soil, showing adaptations to a hotter, drier climate.
