Rhacodactylus leachianus, the New Caledonian giant gecko, is the largest living gecko species. It is an omnivore that eats small animals and fruit. They also form pair bonds and are the most vocal geckoes. Like many Pacific islands, New Caledonia has lost much of its unique, geographically isolated biodiversity due to habitat loss and invasive species. Up until a couple thousand years ago, New Caledonia had giant horned turtles and terrestrial crocodiles! In the future, I imagine that R. lechianus will become frugivores and live their entire lives in the trees to avoid the new predators. They will also form troops and use calls to communicate in order to further protect each other. They will live very similarly to monkeys. As absurd as it seems, a similar Pacific lizard exists: the Solomon Islands skink. It just goes to show the amazing evolution that happens on islands!
