Toucans live in warm, humid tropical rainforests of Central and South America, using their colorful beaks and bodies for camouflage while hopping between trees. Climate change and deforestation are changing these environments, leading to hotter temperatures, less humidity, fewer trees, and less fruit. As a result, toucans may need to adapt by developing duller feathers, longer wings for traveling greater distances, and need to have a more varied diet, including seeds and insects. This quick environmental change over the next 100 years will challenge those toucans unable to adapt quickly, putting their survival at risk.
