This toucan may adapt to deforestation and climate change by growing semipalmate (partially webbed) feet in place of their current zygodactyl (climbing and branch griping) feet. Semipalmate feet would better suit the rising water levels, as well as allow them to walk longer distances on land, similar to shore birds. Another manner of adaptation may be hooked beaks to better accommodate a diet consisting mainly of meat, due to deforestation causing a scarcity of fruits. Additionally, the bird's body shape may change. Firstly, becoming smaller in relation to its beak, so the blood vessels in the beak have less body mass to cool down, allowing for more efficient cooling. Secondly, growing smaller, rounded wings, like a ground bird, due to the lack of foliage. And lastly, developing a more brown and color palate, in contrast to its former vibrant colors, to better blend in with the sparsely vegetated area.
