Rainbow Lorikeets have very bright colors. They have bright blue feathers on their heads and bellies, and green feathers on their necks, tails, and wings. The top of their head is called a crown, and the back of their neck is called a nape. They feed on flowering plants, crushing berries with their beaks and using their tongues to suck out nectar. They also eat seeds, fruit, and insects. Rainbow Lorikeets live on the east coast of Australia, as well as in parts of Indonesia and other islands in the South Pacific. They live in large flocks to protect themselves from predators. In the future, climate change may make the rainforest dry and dull. If plants and trees fade in color, the lorikeets’ bright feathers could make them easy for predators to spot. To survive, they might need to fade their colors to better blend in with their surroundings.
