The Arctic fox currently lives in the cold Arctic tundra, relying on snow and ice for camouflage and hunting. As the climate warms, its habitat is predicted to become grassier and less snowy, forcing the fox to move more north. Red foxes, which thrive in warmer areas, are already moving into their habitat and competing for food.
To survive. Arctic foxes may adapt by developing darker fur to blend in with bare ground, thinner coats for warmer weather, and possibly longer legs for faster movement across open land. These changes could take thousands of years, but climate change is happening much faster. Within just a few decades, this could happen. The Arctic fox’s adaptations may not keep up with rapid rate of change, its survival will depend on finding colder areas or the world somehow slowing down climate change.
